artist Statement

As an artist, my primary focus is drawing and mixed media, and my work is a reflection of my love and passion for art. I am drawn to vibrant colors, free-flowing movement, and a happy, serene tone. My dynamic drawings are a representation of the many layers of my personality, talent, and care-free spiritual living.

My vision for my art is to depict African Americans in a higher light, as kings and queens living freely and confidently, rather than perpetuating the common narrative of the African American struggle. I believe that it is important to showcase the beauty and strength of the African American community, and my art is a means of doing so.

I use a variety of mediums in my work, including metallic acrylic paint, ink pen, and watercolor pencils. I place great importance on the details of each piece, ensuring that every line and curve is meticulously placed. Recently, I have been experimenting with oil paint markers and a more sculptural canvas using plates.

My love for art has been with me since early childhood, and while I have only been presenting my work professionally the last few years, it has been a fulfilling journey. When I am not creating art, I manage online customer interactions for a government social media help desk in the Washington, DC area. My hobbies include photography, gardening, farming, and engaging in green activities.

You can find me on Instagram (@justd.art, or just.destjil@gmail.com) where I share my latest works and creative endeavors. My hope is that my art brings joy and inspiration to those who view it, and that it contributes to a greater appreciation of African American culture and beauty.
